The author says this to the readers. Becky and Rawdon had gotten into an arguement because Becky was hiding money from him that other men had gave her. Also, she had been involved with other men, putting Rawdon off to the side. Rawdon was sick of this so he took action. He left her. He was not going to put up with her sneaking around to benefit herself. This show that Rawdon is standing up for himself and being the man he should be.
George Osborne
He was a man of social rank; yet love pushed him back and forth.
Dobbin says this to show the relationship that George and Amelia had together. Dobbin has known George since they were little and he knew that George was in love with Amelia. This relationship was set up ever since they were children because their fathers did business with one another. Since the Sedley family had lost everything, both Amelia’s and George’s family did not approve of the marriage. However, this did not matter to George nor Amelia. They were happy with each other.
Joseph Sedley
His importance in life was his appearance, yet he settled with what was in front of him.
This is said by the narrator to the audience. It is in reference to Jos, Amelia’s brother. Amelia and Becky have just gotten home from school. Amelia has shown Becky around. Becky says she is jealous because Amelia has loving parents, and a brother that must adore her. However, Amelia says that he does not. Based on this physical description, we can tell that Jos is very full of himself. He dresses himself in all the finery of the day, just to visit his family. He wants to impress others with his appearance.
